APPLICATION
::Basic Information::
Name: Jia Long Wang, "Jia"
Age: 16
Birthday: 1 July
Appearance: Jia is fairly short for his age and has a very svelte figure with strangely prominent hips, giving him a rather ambiguous frame. He wears his dark brown hair in short, choppy layers which frame his pale face; heavy bangs (dutifully brushed to the left) almost completely cover his thick eyebrows, which have been an endless source of frustration for him since childhood. His golden eyes are somewhat sleepy looking and never seem to be focused on anything, giving the impression that Jia is always in the middle of a daydream. Because of his far off expression, it’s extremely difficult to predict what he may be thinking. His lips are usually pulled into a very slight frown, and it’s rare to ever see him smile.
Due to Jia’s tendency to channel his mutant abilities through his hands, it’s very rare that any other part of his body is completely engulfed by flame, allowing him to wear unaltered clothes. Still, he’s managed to completely destroy the clothes on his back on more than one occasion. Curiously, he has an aversion to shoes and refuses to wear them unless he’s outside; as soon as he steps foot inside of a building, he immediately takes them off.
Strengths
[/b] Even in the oddest situations, Jia has a hard time getting himself worked up to the point of utter panic. He views the situation with a logical eye first, eliminating any and all emotion from the equation until he’s gotten a fair grasp on what he’s dealing with. Though there are times when even he gets mentally rattled, he does his very best to keep it under wraps, knowing that chaos is the last thing anyone needs in a dire situation.::Basic Information::

Strengths
[+] Intelligent: Due to his upbringing, Jia is well read and has a backlog of knowledge about the most obscure subjects, specifically, the medicinal qualities of various herbs and foods. He absorbs any new knowledge like an sponge and is always eager to learn. However, if he finds the subject bland, his effort will plunge.
[+] Loyal: Jia isn’t overtly affectionate, but forms strong bonds with those who have been with him for a long time, especially through the toughest of days. Once Jia decides that you’re a part of his family, the status is permanent, unless you hurt him in some way. Jia is often uncertain if this level of loyalty is reciprocated by those he cares for, but has decided that, in the end, that sort of thing doesn’t really matter.[/ul]
Weaknesses
[-] Distant: Because of his inherent distrust of other people, Jia can be infuriatingly quiet and apathetic. Afraid of letting anyone catch sight of his insecurities, he puts on a mask of casual indifference and often edges his way around important questions by cracking jokes or mocking others. Unless he considers you a part of his family, you will never see a genuine smile on his face.
[-]Blunt: If you’re doing something or acting a certain way that Jia finds stupid or irritating, he will tell you, and he isn’t going to be very nice about it. Sugarcoating things takes time and effort he simply isn’t willing to exert, especially since his way makes the problem go away much faster. He doesn’t act this way to be purposefully rude, though he does lack the patience and eloquence required to deliver his opinions in a less callous manner.
[-] Insecure: Jia is, at his core, very insecure about his own abilities and subconsciously seeks approval from others. He’s terrified of making mistakes, fearing that it will worsen the already low opinion people may have of him.

Power: Pyrokinesis
Brief Description of Abilities: Jia is able to create and manipulate fire with relative ease, and can withstand temperatures up to 1100 degrees Celsius. Though the flames themselves can be used offensively, they have a maximum distance of only fifteen feet from Jia’s body, and they tend to be used as more of a reflexive defense in the form of a fiery barrier. While he can and has completely converted himself into pure flame before, he avoids doing this as it leaves him completely vulnerable to water and any sort of liquid.
While Jia’s body is impervious to the flames he creates, if they are doused or stamped out in any way, without his knowledge or consent, he will feel physical pain; its severity depending on the size of the flame and the method used to put out. Smothering the flame causes the least harm while dousing it with water causes the most.
Enrolled at The Academy?: Yes
::Advanced::
Personality: Jia is normally quiet and can come off rude whenever he speaks, though it’s completely unintentional and he’s often oblivious as to why people react the way they do. His social skills are lacking in certain areas (namely the whole ‘support and comfort’ thing) and he’s rather awkward when around people he isn’t too familiar with; it’s as if he’s trying too hard to come off as impressive. Jia also has an annoying habit of never answering any question with 100% certainty, often adding an ‘I guess’ or a ‘maybe’ to the statement to add to the ambiguity. He likes giving nicknames to other people; the more he likes them, the quirkier the nickname will be.
Due to certain events in his past, Jia’s inherently distrustful of other people, especially humans. He likes to keep to himself, though isn't completely opposed to company (as long as they give him some breathing room). While his admirable self control keeps his destructive powers in check, he occasionally loses his cool and incinerates anything he happens to be holding...that is, if he doesn't cast out a short burst of flame that destroys everything within a 5 foot radius. Jia is unused to physical contact and generally dislikes it, though he'll do his best not to use his fire to scare anyone off.
History: Jia's powers manifested his sixth birthday, as he was blowing out the candles on his cake. While his parents were shocked to discover that their child had produced more flames instead of blowing them out, they weren’t completely opposed to having a mutant for a son. However, when his destructive power was noticed by others, it was recommended that Jia be handed over to an organization that was known for finding families better suited to deal with more problematic mutants. Only wanting the best for their child, his parents eventually agreed.
In reality, the organization sought out mutants with specific abilities with the intention to sell them to wealthy businesses where they would be of use. The Coral Corporation, an up and coming electronics company based in Galena City, ‘adopted’ Jia with the intention of putting his flames to good use. They needed something to power their facility, something less expensive than their usual means of producing electricity. They placed the child into specialised clothes and left him a fireproof ‘bedroom’ that was directly connected to the building’s power source. He was encouraged him to produce as much fire as he possibly could at his age, the working staff withholding food if his performance didn’t meet expectations.
Jia was kept in the solitary room, engulfed in a constant firestorm, for fourteen hours a day, seven days a week. Those placed in charge of him were armed with fire hoses, just in case he attacked. In the few hours he was allowed to rest, the boy would bury himself in books that some more sympathetic staff members would leave him; a few would even stop by on a regular basis to help the boy learn how to read and write as he grew older.
As the years passed, so did the intensity of his flames and the level of control he had over them. When Jia was fourteen, an oversight allowed him to escape the prison he’d spent nearly eight years inside. The door to his bedroom, which only locked from the outside, was left slightly ajar after someone came in to bring him food. He completely blew the door from its hinges, and made a run for it, melting any obstacle in his path. Jia managed to evade capture by hiding out in areas close to the water, where no one would think to look for him.
During his second week out, Jia overheard someone talking about a local school that also served as a refuge for mutants. Deciding that it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing to get a proper education (plus somewhere nice and clean to sleep), he slowly made his way to the opposite end of the city and enrolled into the academy, thankful that there were no questions asked.
Sample RP:
Jia smothered his yawn with a fist as the class instructor continued to drone on and on about the experiment he was seriously doubting they would ever get to conduct. There were only so many ways to tell a group of half-awake students that chemicals were dangerous to work with.
Continuing to spin a ballpoint pen idly across his fingers, the young teen glanced at the wall clock across the room and watched as the seconds ticked by. He was growing more impatient with each soft 'click' of the second hand; by now their teacher's voice was nothing more than a monotonous hum, the words 'safety' and 'fire hazard' being repeated more times than necessary.
Ten minutes had passed and there was still no sign that the old man was going to shut up anytime soon. Heaving a bored sigh, Jia spun the pen faster, as if it would somehow make the uneventful class end that much sooner. A sharp jab to his left side snapped him out of his mid-afternoon slump. The silver pen was now alight with a faint orange glow, steadily growing more intense the faster it moved.
Jia muttered an quiet, somewhat inauthentic apology and placed the pen back onto the tabletop, eyeing it warily.
